How to Sew a Button
What You’ll Need:
Button
Needle
Thread (matching the fabric color)
Scissors
Fabric (the item with the missing button)
Steps:
Prepare the Thread: Cut a piece of thread about 24 inches long. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.
Position the Button: Place the button in the desired position on the fabric. If the button has four holes, you can choose to sew it in a crisscross or straight pattern.
Start Sewing:
For a 4-hole button:
Insert the needle from the back of the fabric, pulling it through one hole and then down to the opposite hole. Repeat this pattern for the other two holes, crisscrossing the thread.
For a 2-hole button:
Insert the needle from the back through one hole, then back down through the other hole. Repeat several times until secure.
Secure the Button: When you’ve gone through the holes 4-6 times and the button feels firm, it’s time to secure it.
Create a Shank (optional but recommended for thicker fabrics):
Wrap the thread around the stitches beneath the button 2-3 times to create a tiny loop or shank. This gives the button extra room to move and helps prevent it from pulling the fabric.
Finish Off: Take the needle to the back of the fabric and make a knot by looping the thread through the stitches you just made. Trim any excess thread.
Final Check: Ensure the button is securely attached and has a little wiggle room (especially for thicker fabrics) before wearing your freshly mended item!
